Greetings Altec fans,
As a long-time user of the large format Altec horns & drivers with symbiotic, aluminum, and pascalite diaphragms, I've had some recent positive results from testing some non-Altec phenolic drivers. I've been watching the Ebay thing and others for Altec 290 offerings, nothing too desirable has turned up. I need to know:
1) How much should I expect to fairly pay for a functioning pair of 290's (70V transformers not needed, these will be for home hifi, HT)
2) If you have a properly functioning matched pair of 290's (cosmetics are not that important), I'm looking to purchase or trade.
thanks!
Boyd
if you have some 290's / 292's you are willing to part with, contact me at

I have been successful at getting these around $350. Even up to around $500 is reasonable. beyond that I would wait for the next pair. They come up in singles often too.

Recently I paid about $210+shipping for a matched pair of 290-16K which are in better condition than the ones on eBay right now.

What's a matched pair?
I have no doubt you got a pair that cheap- but that's not the going rate.
There are deals- if you had unlimited time you can always get the best deal.
Otherwise, if you want something and it's a decent deal...
No offense, I don't see anything really wrong with the Ebay drivers. If I needed them I'd go $300-350.
I'm gonna want 299's. But I have a line on a slew of Alnico motored 291-16b's- thinking of just changing out the phragms.

I still don't understand any point.
As I said, yes there are deals.
Take the average of all 290 auctions the last year.
You seem to want to point out the two lowest as the going rate. As a businessman, I can't think like that. There was a pair that went for $400 a few months ago- doesn't mean that's an average any more than the two auctions you posted.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What's not to understand? The market value is not what it might be a year ago!
I did not select the lowest two auctions.
I started looking for a pair of 290s on eBay since June and I saw four pairs since then. The first pair sold for $168.24 back in June, this is the same pair I ended up buying for $204.50 (link above) later on in August. The third pair sold for $112(link above). And finally, the fourth pair just sold for $224.
There were 30 some 290K's here in a government deal. Unfortunately all blown, but I let them go at $30 to somewhere else. Doesn't mean the going rate is $30 each for blown 290's.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is totally irrelevant.
I pointed out what is a much more typical price than what you paid. I would assume the fellow would pay a lower price if he could get it.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">On the contrary, based on the recent eBay sales (last 4-5 months) what I paid seems to be the new typical price.

Kudret I don't care. the only think you've done is convince me you form opinions based on small samples.
This is about as important as a bicycle is to a fish. If the price has come down in the last 6 months and stay that way, great.
You haven't watched all auctions for the last 4-5 months. You would have seen pairs go higher.
At least one pair went for 400. I don't see that figured in to your "average'.
I won't reply to you anymore on this thread. you want to win more than you want to be right.
